The Fargo Forum conducted a poll last week, showing that Measure 1 has likely support from about 50 percent of North Dakotans. This poll was conducted prior to the public opposition to Measure 1 by the North Dakota Medical Association, the Fargo Forum, the Grand Forks Herald. the Jamestown Sun and the Dickinson Press. The poll was also conducted prior to people knowing about the serious concerns on end-of-life decisions that the AARP has for this measure.
This poll tells us what we already know on the North Dakotans Against Measure 1 campaign – we must educate voters about the far-reaching effects of this proposed permanent change to the constitution and that’s exactly what we are doing.
The polling doesn’t tell you something critically important. When North Dakotans learn about the impact this constitutional change would have on things like end-of-life directives and fertility treatments like IVF, they change their minds and oppose the measure. When North Dakotans learn that this will allow government intrusion into the most personal of medical decisions, they say NO.
Our ads explaining the impact of Measure 1 began airing this week – after the polling of the Forum was completed – so we know these poll results are not going to stay this way for long.
