North Dakota Medical Association Opposes Measure 1

The North Dakota Medical Association (NDMA) is opposing Measure 1 in
the upcoming election. The NDMA statement reads “because of the imprecise wording and unknown consequences, NDMA is opposed to Constitutional Measure 1.’

The NDMA is dedicated to promoting physician leadership in ethics and advocacy, helping North Dakota physicians provide high-quality medical care for their patients.

Measure 1 would permanently change the language in the North Dakota Constitution to read “the inalienable right to life of every human being at any stage of development must be recognized and protected.”

“We are proud to see the NDMA state its opposition to this poorly worded measure. Measure 1 is not just an opinion, it is a permanent change to our constitution,” said Dina Butcher, who opposes the measure and is the Chairwoman of North Dakotans Against Measure 1. “We are urging the people of this state to vote no and protect those deeply personal medical decisions from government intervention.”

NDMA joins the Fargo Forum, North Dakota’s largest newspaper, and other organizations such as the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in opposing the measure. The AARP has expressed concern about the end-of-life  implications of the measure.
